Different camera shots
Close up shot
A close up shot is a shot that has very little background. This shot is from The Grey with Liam Neasan. This shot is used to focus on one particular area, However, we can still see most of his forehead within this shot. In this case the shot is focusing on his eyes to show his expression within them.
Extreme Close up
Extreme close up is a shot which allows the viewer to move into the actors space. Used mainly to show features that would not be seen from far. The shot from X-men is similar to the close up shot but the actors eyes take up the whole shot.
Establishing Shot
The point of this shot is in the name. It is used to establish the location of the shot. In this case it is Hogwarts. The shot is showing that the following shots are taking place in Hogwarts from Harry Potter.
Mid-Shot
The Mid-shot is a shot that shows more of the subject than a close up shot does and still keeps detail It Shows the background and only shows the subject above the torso. It is a shot that is natural as it shows everything you would see if you where looking at a person
Long-Shot
Long shots are shots that show the whole subject. Within this shot from Thor, it shows a lot of the background nd Thor takes up almost all the shot.
Over the shoulder shot
Over the shoulder shots are used during conversations. This allows the viewer to focus on the subject who is talking and lets them know who they other subject is within the conversation. In my example we can see Batman talking to the Joker.
Low angle shot
The low angle shot films from a lower point and shoots up at a character or subject, making them appear larger so as to convey them as heroic, dominant or intimidating. It’s also another way of making cities look empty.
High angle shot
In contrast with the low angle shot, the high angle shot films from a higher point and looks down on the character or subject, often isolating them in the frame. Basically the direct opposite of the low angle, it aims to portray the subject as submissive, inferior or weak in some way.
Two-Shot
The Two-Shot shows two characters in one shot. They are very simple but they are mainly used to establish relationships between characters.
Dolly Shot
This shot sees the camera track forward from the actor whilst simultaneously zooming out, or vice-versa. So, the foreground generally stays the same while the background increases or decreases across the frame.
Master Shot
Often confused with the establishing shot, this too, identifies key signifiers like who is in the shot and where it’s taking place. However, unlike the establishing shot that has a tendency to focus more on location, the master captures all actors in the scene and runs the entire length of the action taking place.
Ariel Shot
It’s all in the name – the aerial shot is filmed from the air and is often used to establish a location

Short Film Treatment and Praposal
I wish to create a 5 minute short film that outlines the basic story of the Landlady where a 17 year old boy named Billy stays in a bed and breakfast owned by a very strange old lady. However, my short film will have an added bonus of my own narrative added into the end where a creature escapes part of the house and terrorises the characters. From this project I wish to gain skill and understanding in how to create a film. It will be interesting to experiment with different shots and see what works and what does not.
My goal is to create a horror short film that sets creates suspention that builds through out the whole story. I wish to create a high standard short film that takes advantage of sound and dialogue to create an interesting story. I will build suspense by slowly placing hints that something is not right. These hints willet more obvious as the story goes along such as bumps and crashes being heard from up the stairs.
I have 6 weeks to create my project and to make sure I create a good piece of work I will spend at least an hour on it per day. This will than add up over time and in the end will keep me on top of all my work and will stop me from rushing it. Each stage will have to be put into different sections to make sure I put as much time and effort into each part equally. To get the project done on time I will defiantly need to create a plan in the form of a Gantt chart which summarises what needs to be completed and when. If I can keep on top of this then. will be able to create a good piece of work. I will need to get people who will act as voice actors to dither dialogue into the short film. This can be done by getting one of my friends to play as one character and I can play as the other one.

Shot list
This is my shot list which consists of 78 shots. I made this as a base plane to follow when created my story board meaning i have everything planned and just need to draw the images.
Storyboard - basic
I created a basic storyboard which helped me
The first 7 mages where never used in the final storyboard as i felt they where not needed in the story.
I certainly struggled to draw the faces of characters however this is the simple sketch so does not really matter.
These are over the shoulder shots which are important for the conversation between the two characters however i feel that they are taken up a lot of shots and is making my final job harder to create.
admittedly some of these images did not turn out how i wanted them or how i viewed it in in my head.
I didnt feel the need to draw the faces on some of the images as i felt there was not much point on my simple storyboard.
I started the experiment with complex shots such as zoom as seen in 32.
The stairs where certainly difficult to draw during this as i needed to get them the same each time
Trying to draw the same person each time was not easy at ll i did not really happen
These scenes coming up are all about building suspense.
These scenes is when the viewer and when billy first see the creature for the first time which is what the whole film has been building up to.
Overall these where very quick and rough images so i do not expect them to be good. I did enjoy it but felt like it was hard to draw exactly what i want.
Final Storyboard
This is my final storyboard which is where i took the original storyboard and improved it by improving the drawings and adding shading.
I really like the way i drew the face in the 14th image however struggled on the smaller faces.
The drawings on this page is not the best and could have been better.
I think t this part i wanted to get the pictures done better also i struggled to make some of the drawings better as my images would turn out the same each time.
i struggled to draw the book as for some reason i found it easier to draw on bigger pages them on small thumbnail size images.
I certainly found it difficult to keep on drawing the faces onto the characters. I was never able to replicate the good facial expressions that i had on other drawings.
I removed a shot 42 as i felt it was not needed in the final product.
Again i took another shot out as did not thin it was needed.
Again, i took to shots out as i did not need them.
These shots are where we first see the creature and i cant wait for actually make this part in my movie.
Overall i think this storyboard will certainly help me create a good film. As i know what i am doing and can easily follow it.
Making the short film
Creatures room
Outside the house
I took this picture after filming which is why it is not in one piece. I created a stand behind the front of the house which i put the hallway onto to create a smooth transition between the two scenes.
Hallway
This is the set that most of the film takes place in. filming on the roof was really difficult as there was no stability so the characters kept on falling over.
Kitching door
The Old Lady
The Monster
Billy Weaver
I made these models out of Plasticine and a flexible wooden skeleton. The skeleton gave my models the basic movement. However when i saw basic i mean basic as trying to do any complex movements was really difficult and at times impossible. I filmed my shots using a Nikon Digital slr. Which did its job well but also had it issues. These issues where when my models fell it was difficult to get them back into the same position again. Also the camera could not focus on close up object making close up shots near impossible.
Post Editing
I edited my project within After Effects. I did this because it was the software i was most familiar with at he time.
I broke up a lot of the footage to allow more space and time for the audio that i added in later on to fit in.
One of the most useful tools that after effects had was the ability to time remap. This allowed me to slow down or speed up the footage. At first my footage was very fast and did not look natural. However with time remapping i was able to slow down the footage. Although this was helpful it still had its issues. This meant if the footage is slowed down the footage would stutter with the frames being spaced further apart. meaning you have to get the perfect timing.
Audio
I got most of my audio from YouTube as sound effect videos
Dark Piano - Music
Dark ominous music. - Music
Door Knocking - Sound Effect
Ball Rolling - Sound Effect
Epic Intesne Horror Music - Music
Door Knocking sound effects
Footsteps on Wood - Sound Effects
Footsteps on Concrete - Sound Effects
Scary Dark Film Music - Music
Road Noise - Sound Effect
Spooky Sound - Effects
Creaking - Sound Effect
Wind Sound effects.
All of these sound effects i have used in my project. Most of the time i have just taken small parts from them and used them where i feel fit in my project.
I edited the audio that i ether downloaded or recorded myself in Audacity. This allows me me to extract the background sound to make the sound clearer and allows me to take the parts i want from the audio making it easier to edit in After Effects.
