Modelling Artist

Modelling Artist creates characters, creatures, weapons and plants. The process of a modelling artist begins by creating a mesh which looks like multiple lines overlapping each other. From this mesh the artist is able to create something that closely represents what they intended to make.

  • They do this by using multiple digital tools which includes brushes that are used within programs such as Zbrush. Other pieces of software such as Maya are also industry standard but are used to create hard surfaces objects like guns or boxes.

  • A modelling artists work begins early on in the pipeline. Once they have finished there work they pass it on to be textured and animated.

  • I however would prefer to focus in more on character and creature creation part. As I enjoy adding the detail and using Zbrush. This would mean I would most likely be texturing them as well.

  • These are some of the softwares that are used by a Modelling artist: 3D modelling and sculpting software (Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, Mudbox, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Quixel, RenderMan)

What skills and requirements are needed?

  • Art: Have a good understanding of form, colour and texture and know how they can be put together.

  • Interpretation: Be able to create a 3D model from a 2D image.

  • Knowledge of 3D modelling programs, be able to use programs such as Maya, Zbrush and Substance Painter.

  • Be organised and be able to work within a set time schedule

  • Be able to work with others in there own pipelines

I found that messaging a lot of people then at least one would reply and Jason Brown did. It was tricky to get reply's as a lot of professionals are very busy with the work they have.

Jason did give a lot of good answers that helped me understand what happens in that role.

David

I messaged David a while back for my first assignment and he gave me some very detailed answers. The questions however are different to the ones I asked the other two people due to the separate time apart. David did give some very good incite to his role.
